A Jazz Evening to Remember - in aid of Polio Eradication.

Purple for Polio
drinksOur evening in the Great Hall of Hexham Abbey in aid of Polio Eradication was a great success with over 40 people from local Rotary Clubs and their guests attending. Our President, Roy Dallison together with club member George Robinson had made the arrangements.
There were pre-dinner drinks for club members in dinnerthe Prior’s Hall which gave us a chance to mingle and chat over a glass of champagne before moving into the Great Hall for dinner. The main course was Lasgne and this was followed by Eton Mess or Fruit Salad and we helped ourselves to tea or coffee.
raffleFund raising was by means of a raffle with excellent prizes, master minded by George and this raised over £300. In addition two generous donations were auctioned. The first, a PHFprize from the Beaumont Hotel in Hexham for Dinner, Bed & Breakfast for two, auctioned by Andy Rigg, went for £150; while the second, from Northern Rail for 4 journeys anywhere on their network, auctioned by Andy Prior, raised just under £100. All put together with a silver collection means we raised over £800 towards eliminating Polio. As this sum will be matched 2 to 1 by the Bill Gates Foundation the total gain to Polio will be over £2,400. A magnificent sum.
JazzGroupA highlight of the evening then occurred. President Roy announced the award of the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship to Andy Pryor, our Treasurer. This was awarded not for the work he has done for the club but for his charitable work in the community where he has been influential in helping both his local village hall and the Newcastle Cathedral obtain significant grants for restoration work. Andy was taken by complete surprise!! An award richly deserved.
After the presentation and the drawing of the raffle we were entertained to an amazing evening of jazz by the Hot Club du Nord. Led by Emma Fisk on violin with James Birkett and David Harris on guitars and with Bruce Rollo on double bass, the quartet enthralled us all with their gypsy jazz style, huge energy and a deep love of the music. A fitting finale to an excellent evening.
