Mike Coleman and Core Music

Hexham Rotary honours a Hexham man
MikeColemanAt their weekly meeting on Monday 11th November, the President of Hexham Rotary announced that the Club had decided to present a Paul Harris Fellowship to Mike Coleman of Core Music in recognition of his dedication to making music available to everyone and his continuing hard work in making a success of Core Music which brings music within reach of everyone.
A Paul Harris Fellowship is Rotary’s highest award and is given to those who have shown care and dedication in helping others in their local community. In making the presentation, the President, Andy Rigg, praised the work Mike is doing in the community.
The award was made just after Mike Coleman had told the club about the work that Core Music was doing in Hexham and how it had started from small beginnings in 2008 to its position today where it is hoping to gain charitable status that will enable it to do even more for the local community.
Our Picture shows the moment of the Presentation.

It was in 2008 that Mike Coleman, with the vision of making music more accessible to the community, opened Core Music. Core Music is a not for profit social enterprise and since it opened its doors it has introduced thousands of people to music and its various forms some of whom have gone on to pursue exciting careers in the music industry.
Today it provides facilities to more than 200 people a week to learn a musical instrument, play music together, sing as part of this choir and generally celebrate music in all its forms and genres. Whether it is to learn and study towards grade exams or just to play for fun, Core Music offers a safe, friendly and non-judgement talk environment where people of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy music.
Core Music is at the heart of the community running special events, supporting local festivals, hosting small concerts and running regular weekly clubs and workshops. The main aim of the organisation is to provide an environment for people to enjoy what they are doing because they believe that this enables people to thrive. Since 2008 they have witnessed so many people on their journey through music and seen them grow and develop not just as musicians but also as people.
Since founding Core Music in 2008 Mike Coleman has been fully involved in the project and in 2016 he was named as one of the BBC’s Music Day “Unsung Heroes” in recognition of the contribution he and  Core Music had made to music in Hexham and the region.
